Chi or Tsuchi, meaning EARTH, represents the hard, solid objects of the world. The most basic example of chi is in a stone. Stones are highly resistant to movement or change, as is anything heavily influenced by chi. In people, the bones, muscles and tissues are represented by chi. Emotionally, chi is predominantly associated with stubbornness, stability, physicality and gravity. In the mind, it is confidence; and emotionally it is a desire to have things remain as they are; a resistance to change. When under the influence of this chi mode or "mood", we are aware of our own physicality and sureness of action.
Arts and Crafts
The most relevant items for discussion within the context of the element Earth are the physical items I associate with most. The paintings, drawing, sculptures and other artifacts of artwork that I have produced with my own hands. I tend to consider many of these works to be fleeting thought patterns given a essence of solidity, whether they be on paper or if they take a more substantial form.
Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art.
- Leonardo da Vinci
Most of the works I produce in this manner have been kept in some form...whether this comes through filing away papers, archiving their appearance through photographs, or hiding away the precious items in cupboards and chests so that they might be revealed later to remind me of the insights that gave birth to their forms.
While I have found that many of my earlier works are derivative in nature, I have continually tried to push the limits of my imagination, my technique and my medium. This has resulted in numerous experiments that have not gone as originally intended. Few of these I consider to be failures, instead they are simply new techniques that can be added to my arsenal for future projects.
